Top Ten New Features of Viewpoint 13.0.1

By introducing new, powerful portlets, adding and enhancing administrative capabilities, and achieving product internationalization, the Teradata Viewpoint 13.0.1 release continues to deliver state-of-the-art system management and monitoring tools, all within your web-browser.
In addition to delivering new portlets, the 13.0.1 release added and automated Teradata Viewpoint administrative tasks into the redesigned Configuration portlet, which is accessed from the Administration menu.
Here are the top ten new features in the Viewpoint 13.0.1 release.
SQL Scratchpad Portlet
The new SQL Scratchpad portlet allows Teradata Viewpoint users to login and submit SQL queries to a Teradata Database system and view the returned results. Queries can be saved and rerun and query results can be exported to CSV (Comma Separated Values). A results section expands to display four tabs that you can use to see the query results (RESULTS tab), display the SQL statements in the query (SQL tab), view the query steps in logical order (EXPLAIN tab), and view block information (BLOCKED BY tab). For long-running queries, the SQL Scratchpad portlet shows the active step or if your query is blocked.
The SQL Scratchpad portlet is included in the Self-Service bundle.
Space Usage Portlet
Meant to be an investigative tool, the new Space Usage portlet presents, in tabular form, the latest data on perm space, spool space, and temp space for all Teradata Databases running on the system you specify. Data is presented in two reporting formats; by most space on a Teradata Database, and by most space on the vprocs. A filter option is provided so you can display a specific database, table, or vproc. The Space Usage portlet is fully customizable, letting you choose which metrics will be reported, and optionally setting metric threshold values.
The Space Usage portlet is included in the Teradata Management bundle.
Lock Viewer Portlet
Locks, whether applied to a particular database object or caused by a specific user, can degrade system performance if not managed effectively. The new Lock Viewer portlet focuses on lock data such as transaction, session, and lock object identifiers, and global deadlocks. This information is reported after the lock contention has been resolved. DBAs can use the Viewpoint rewind feature to view past lock data. The Lock Viewer portlet reports information in the Lock Log report, which can be customized to display and order specific data columns.
The Lock Viewer portlet is included in the Teradata Management bundle.
Remote Console Portlet
Run Teradata Database console utilities from within Viewpoint. The new Viewpoint Remote Console portlet runs one utility at a time, on the system you specify. You can enter and submit commands from the portlet input line, and manage the console connection. A view is also provided to review submitted commands, which are temporarily saved and available for review as long as the utility is running. Need to run another utility on a different system? Just add another instance of the Remote Console portlet to Viewpoint, specifying another system.
The Remote Console portlet is included in the Teradata Management bundle.
Configuration Portlet Data Collector Enhancements
Two new features in the Configuration portlet can be seen in every Data Collector navigation pane. In a glance use the new set of icons to check for data collection errors ( ) and if any Data Collector are currently disabled ( ). By clicking on the error icon, you can view an error log.
You can also access the new Disk Usage distribution graph from the Configuration portlet. This graph shows the space used by each Data Collector on the Teradata Viewpoint Server.
Viewpoint Monitoring Portlet
The Viewpoint Monitoring portlet illustrates one of the key tenets of the Viewpoint design philosophy: present information in a precise graphic format. This new portlet reports on the Viewpoint Server, plotting multiple metrics on the same graph. You choose which metrics are reported on, and then selectively view each in the graph. The portlet employs a vibrant color scheme to display each metric sparkline and its performance envelope.
The Viewpoint Monitoring portlet is a new addition to the Self-Service bundle.
Improved LDAP Support
One of the goals of Teradata Viewpoint was to provide controls to administer all of Teradata Viewpoint through Viewpoint’s web interface. Another new feature of the Configuration portlet, an LDAP SERVERS navigation pane provides the controls to add an LDAP server to perform user authentication. Also added was support for multiple LDAP servers, and the ability to setup and test settings without restarting the Viewpoint server. Once authenticated, configuration settings assign Viewpoint roles and auto-provision new users.
External Backup
The Backups navigation pane is a new feature of the Configuration portlet, allowing you to configure, enable and disable Viewpoint Server backups. The ability to choose between a local backup location and a network file server (nfs_mount) has been added. You can also choose the time of the daily backups Once configured, the backup process can be enabled or disabled.
Localization
In compliance with the I18N standard, dates, numbers, and times within Teradata Viewpoint are displayed in the language specified in the Viewpoint user’s Profile. Language and format settings are applied to Viewpoint sessions and are maintained for future sessions. The Viewpoint Server language and format settings are the default settings.
The list of available languages shown in the Teradata Viewpoint Profile is what is currently installed. Viewpoint language packs can be added once they become available.
Clustering
Recognizing the growing scalability and availability needs of Teradata Viewpoint customers, the Viewpoint 13.0.1 release allows Viewpoint servers to be configured in clusters. Each server in a cluster shares the same users, roles, permissions, preferences, and data from the Viewpoint Data Collection Service (DCS). The comprehensive 13.0.1 Viewpoint Configuration Guide provides instructions for implementing three types of clusters: a high availability configuration, a high usage configuration and an advanced configuration, each providing failover capability.
